If you’re hanging around the towns with the locals, you’re sure to pick up references here and there to the old Seven. They’re stories so well believed that people casually mention it in conversation from time to time. ‘Lucky number Seven’ has a very much more powerful meaning around these parts, just as an example. There are a few stories with things tweaked here and there, but I’ll give you the main idea:
The beginning is the most believable part, only because we know its true. Generations and generations back, a virus swept through the wildlife. For the most part it was harmless, maybe made a few birds or deer wander into cities more than usual or die sooner. Unfortunately, for the wild wolf populations that wasn’t the case. Domesticated dogs had built up a tolerance from all the vaccines we gave them. But the wolves had no defense, and it devastated them. Their already endangered populations dwindled to near nothing. Attempts were made to save them, but nothing could be done. Soon, there were only a few dozen of them left in the wild, high in North America.
A lot of people believe the virus was actually created by the government, a biological warfare test that went horribly wrong.. Or maybe horribly right. That would explain why the government isolated the territory in the first place. Back in the day, the government was all over this area, which made it a big time ‘us vs. them’ when it came to the townspeople. Even today big brother has a watch on us, their excuse- ‘conservation of our environment’, making sure we don’t destroy the beautiful forests up here. Yeah, I call bullshit on that one. Our advantage is that the forest is in a lot of ways, on our side. Its too big, and there are too many of us for them to keep the tabs they’d like to. So mostly, they stay out of our fur- er, hair.
Going back to the wolf thing, there weren’t many of them left at all. Most of them were up around these parts, the strong ones anyway. A group of explorers (all known by name, if you ever care to know- but its not important) were spending time in the forest, just living off the land since its so dang beautiful out here. The story pretty much goes that one day they got lost and stayed lost for a few days after that. They were starving and tired and all that, and in the middle of some night were approached by the last pack of living wolves. There were seven wolves and seven humans, and in the middle of that black night in the wild forest, something happened between the humans and the pack.
Some say it was the wolves’ last attempt to keep their species and way of life alive, some say that the humans’ combined sympathy and respect for the animals resulted in a supernatural bond. Whatever the reason, the wolves and humans combined some how, even I cant even think of how its possible. Giving the ability to humans to shift between their original form and this alternate wolf shape. From there, it was kept under wraps although somehow more and more people gained the ability. At first it was believed to be genetics, although there were and still are incidents of isolated people turning as well. We don’t know how it happens, or why, but the only thing for sure is that most people here in the territory have this gift, and that others with the gift are drawn here like a magnet.
Most of us see it as a gift, not a curse, although that isn’t to say everyone loves it. Some people hate what they are, and because of that are given the choice. I’ll cover that in some tips a little later, because unfortunately there are some rules as to how it all works.
Whether or not you think the legend is true, or if its just some crazy evolution or even genetic flaw, it doesn’t matter. We are what we are, and we keep moving forward.

PLOT UPDATE: SUMMER SEASON, YEAR TWO
Ladies and Gentlemen.. we're not as alone as we thought.
Decades ago the government moved into Northshore, under the premise of keeping watch over the shifter population and 'protecting' the human locals. The human locals of course have never felt threatened- the shifters are their family and always have been- but of course, protection was all a ruse.
A lot of wolves disappeared back then, never heard from again. When the government left, it was a happy time for Northshore. Their buildings have still been inhabited.. but have been inactive since then.
But lately there's been some activity in those buildings.. they've been around town, and it looks like more than just a routine checkup.
Keep your muzzles clean and your ears up- who knows what could happen from here.
